ABOUT COSTA RICA

OUR COUNTRY
Costa Rica islocated just two and a half hours by plane from Miami in the USA, Costa Rica is one of the most diverse and beautiful places on earth.
The country has a very stable economy, thanks in part to its devotion to universal public education and health services, as well as a thriving tourism industry. Costa Rica is also the oldest democracy in Latin America and has no armed forces.
Costa Ricans are very aware of the natural paradise they own and as a result, more than 25% of the territory is protected under the national park law. The country has access to the Caribbean and Pacific oceans, seven active volcanoes, diverse mountain ranges and several types of rainforests located on high and lowlands.
WEATHER
Costa Rica is a tropical country, and as such, it has only two seasons: rainy and dry. Our rainy season runs from May to November and the dry season runs from December to April.
During the rainy season, mornings are typically very sunny with clear skies, and during the afternoons it becomes cloudy with showers and occasional thunderstorms that last until nightfall.
Typical temperatures in the Central Valley where the capital city of San José is located are 18 to 28 degrees Celsius (65 to 80 F). For the Pacific and Caribbean coasts the typical temperatures are 21 to 32 degrees Celsius (70 to 90 F). These temperatures may vary depending on the time of the year. The driest and warmest days of the year are during March and April, where these temperatures usually increase 5 degrees on average.
POPULATION
Costa Rica has close to 5 million people, where 60% live in the Central Valley. This area has 4 provinces, San José, Heredia, Alajuela and Cartago, which make up the Great Metropolitan Area. The other 40% of the population lives in the remaining three provinces, Limón, Puntarenas and Guanacaste, the three coastal provinces in Costa Rica.
The country’s population is 96% white or Caucasian, with a small percentage of Afro-Caribbean and Native Indians. The literacy level in Costa Rica is one of the highest in Latin America, at 96%.
